Hearsay: Parking problem deters barbershop's customers

’Bout those barbershop parking places. Hearsayer Peggy, along with her husband, Hearsayer Bobby, have been operating the two-chair City Barber Shop, on South Main Street in Anderson, for some 40 years now. These days, though, there’s a pesky parking problem. Because of a street improvement project, Peggy explained, there are fewer places to park near the barbershop because the spots get taken by folks conducting business at Anderson City Hall across the street. “People who come to City Hall, well, they park in front of our business. We have a lot of elderly clientele at the barbershop and when they come by for a haircut, they see all the parking spaces filled and they think, ‘Well, gosh, they’re so busy there’s no place to park.’ We’re sitting here doing nothing and all the parking places are full. It’s just hard.” So anyhoo, all you Hearsayers who need a haircut, don’t let a lot of filled parking places near the City B. fool you the least little bit. Get your parking-place karma on and by golly, go get a haircut with Peggy and Bobby!

The tale of the sprouting strawberry tree. So Hearsayer Joe of the Highway 29 South area of Anderson has a strawberry tree that’s putting out sprouts that can be replanted. Never heard of a strawberry tree? “What it is,” Joe said, “is an actual tree. Maybe 15 to 20 feet tall. It puts out a fruit. When the berries are first on the tree, they’re red. When they ripen, they turn to a purple color. They have a slight strawberry taste and they are about the size of a large blackberry. You can eat ’em. It’s my understanding that they make excellent jams and jellies.” So, Joe said, he’s got a bunch of strawberry-tree sprouts and rather than mow ‘em down, Joe’s just wondering if anyone would like to dig ‘em up. “I got to thinking, somebody may be interested in having a strawberry tree.” And somebody may also be interested in knowing the scientific name of the strawberry tree. It’s called Arbutus unedo. So, u need o’strawberry tree sprout? Just call Joe at (864) 224-0712.

And as for free walnuts. Hearsayer Jim, who lives “right off Highway 81,” said he’s got black walnuts to give away if you’re willing to bend over and pick ’em up. “They’ve got a shuck on them – you’ve got to peel that off to get to the nut.” Now Hearsay has mixed it up with a walnut shuck and there’s a stain inside that bad boy that can get might messy. “What I do,” Jim said, “is when the walnuts (inside the shucks) are lying on the ground, I stomp on ‘em and most of that shuck will come off.” Well shucks, that sounds pretty easy! So here’s how to get in touch with Jim if you want some free walnuts – (864) 352-6533.
